Dr. Erin Schwoegl was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She developed a passion for learning at a young age and became interested in dentistry during eighth grade when she got braces. To pursue her dream of dental school, Dr. Schwoegl moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend The Ohio State University, where she majored in Biology and minored in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. During her undergraduate studies, she became involved in research, working in laboratories at both Ohio State and the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating magna cum laude from Ohio State, Dr. Schwoegl moved back to Pittsburgh to attend dental school at the University of Pittsburgh where she received the Haines Academic Scholarship. Dr. Schwoegl became interested in periodontics the summer before starting dental school when she was awarded the Dean’s Summer Research Scholarship. During her residency, Dr. Schwoegl was appointed chief resident, due to her exceptional leadership and organizational abilities. Along with earning a certificate in periodontics, she also obtained a Master of Science in Dentistry for her research, "The Effect of Toothpaste Tablets on the Viability and Proliferation of Gingival Fibroblasts," which won first place in the Advanced Education Research Day Competition.
